John Pulley

John is an award-winning communicator. Whether working in print or electronic media, he consistently produces content that captivates and persuades audiences. For more than two decades, his work has appeared in dozens of outlets published by colleges and universities, philanthropic foundations, higher education associations, for-profit companies and newspapers; for seven years he was a reporter and editor at The Chronicle of Higher Education. A graduate of the University of Virginia, John is known for delivering clean copy and getting others to produce their best work. His  passion is telling stories that move people.

Lynne Smyers

A talented and accomplished designer, Lynne works strategically with clients to develop cohesive branding and marketing campaigns that create long-term value and trusted partnerships. With more than 20 years in the communications industry, she has worked for nonprofits, associations, government agencies and corporate clients.  Lynne served as design director for The Penn Stater magazine, the largest alumni publication in the nation. She sat for nine years on the university’s Arts and Architecture Alumni Society board. Lynne began her career as the art director at Washingtonian magazine.

Burton Bollag

A native New Yorker, Burton Bollag brings an international perspective to his work. For more than 30 years, he has covered education, business, politics, technology and other topics, filing reports from Geneva, Prague, London, Paris and Hamburg. His work has appeared on the pages of the New York Times, Le Monde, The Independent, Der Spiegel and the Chronicle of Higher Education. His on-air reports have been aired by National Public Radio and others. Burton’s honors include awards given by the Education Writers Association and the American Academy of Religion. A graduate of the City University of New York, Burton currently resides and works in Washington, D.C.

Julie Bird

Julie brings more than 20 years of journalism experience to The Pulley Group. Her expertise includes military and defense issues, business and industry, economic development, government issues, real estate, mortgage financing, and health information technology. She has served as staff writer, editor or contributor at Air Force Times, the Charlotte Observer, Defense Standard magazine and the Charlotte Business Journal, among others. A graduate of the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, Julie has received numerous professional honors, among them the James J. Strebig Memorial Award, given by the Aviation/Space Writers Association, and Runner-Up for the Gerald Loeb Awards for Distinguished Business and Financial Journalism.
